Canlis: The Weekender Kit Review (The $175 Meal Kit) Is it worth it?

You may be sick of cooking, not have time to go shopping or want to mix it up a bit. I had a recent weekend where I knew I was getting a new puppy and I wasn't going to have much free time. So I issued my own Chopped style challenge. Use only what I have in my fridge and pantry and order one Weekender meal kit from Canlis and see what happens.

Here is my review and experience with a $175 meal kit!

You pick up contact free this box when you go to Canlis.

Now when I picked my box up I ordered the Somm's Choice for 5 wines as well and sadly Canlis forgot to add it to my order. I will share this story soon. I will say, the story ends well.

What can you make with it?

I cooked a lot of great food. This article features some of the food I made with the meal kit and I will share some of the recipes soon.

What Could Be Improved

It would have been nice to have a few things to round out the meal kit.

  1. Crackers, bread or toast point for the smoked salmon dip

  2. Lettuce as I took it as a salad would have been better if there were a few other toppings and a dressing included

  3. Kohlrabi I love but I think most home cooks could be intimidated of it

  4. Suggested food and wine pairings for ingredients or meal suggestions

  5. Cookies could be preportioned. I used a number #16 (2 oz) scoop onto parchment paper and froze the dough so I could have cookies later

Is It Worth It?

Now if you took the time to go shopping and gather all the ingredients you would already pay more yourself and spend more time than the value Canlis is providing to you. The produce is organic, the proteins are super high quality. Just saying the steaks are killer! In short, its totally worth it!

If you looking at the $175 price tag and are a bit apprehensive. Lets break this down. Assuming this was for 2 people and we got 4 meals each bringing it to 8 meals plus some leftover rolled into other meals that I am not counting. A per person per meal cost of roughly $21.88 is cheaper than any steakhouse and below your average sit down dine in restaurant and you save about $30 in cost and your time having Canlis put this together for you.

$21.88 per person per meal cost

I have a few suggestions that Canlis could improve upon but I feel these are minor. This would not stop me from getting this again.

In conclusion, if you are looking to mix it up, have some fun, eat premium food then go out and support a Seattle culinary institution. Canlis's Weekener Kit is a great example how restaurants can adapt well to the COVID-19 crisis and showing you can have some fun as well. Treat yourself and enjoy!
